Harley-Davidson enjoys a strong and storied relationship among motorcycle aficionados, but a recent issue with the oil line on some 2017 models could put riders at risk. Models in the Electra Glide, Road King, Road Glide, and Street Glide lines produced between July 2016 and May 2017 are the subject of a motorcycle recall, the details of which are provided below.
Recall Subject: 2017 Electra Glide Ultra Classic (FLHTCU), Police Electra Glide (FLHTP), Police Road King (FLHP), Road King (FLHR), Road King Special (FLHRXS), Street Glide (FLHX), Street Glide Special (FLHXS), Road Glide (FLTRX), and Road Glide Special (FLTRXS) motorcycles
NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V333000
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has an open campaign affecting Harley-Davidson and some of their more popular models designed for 2017. Campaign number 17V333000 concerns engine and engine-cooling components, which potentially impact 45,589 FL touring motorcycles manufactured by Harley-Davidson since July 2016. The motorcycles have a clamp that is used to secure an engine-cooler line, and it has been found in some bikes to have been improperly installed. As a result, the oil line may detach and cause engine oil to suddenly spill into the path of the rear tire.
Problems with the oil line and the sudden loss of oil in the bike’s path can cause problems controlling or maneuvering the bike, making potentially serious accidents and injuries more likely to occur. According to Ultra Motorcycling, recall-related documents indicate that there have already been several accidents attributed to the problem.
If you own a 2017 Harley-Davidson touring motorcycle of the Electra Glide, Road King, Road Glide, or Street Glide models, you should receive notice from your Harley-Davidson dealer after the motorcycle recall went into effect on June 6, 2017. Under the terms of the recall, your dealer will inspect your oil clamp and replace it for free if any issues are detected.
