  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is recalling 2017 Ram 1500 trucks. The vehicles covered under the recall are equipped with a fuel tank valve that may leak if the vehicle is involved in a rollover accident and the fuel tank becomes inverted. Fuel tank leaks increase the risk of a fire in the event of an accident. Until the issue is resolved, the trucks do not pass the “Fuel System Integrity” requirement established by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS).
  • 2016 and 2017 Ram 1500 vehicles are also under recall for a powertrain issue. In particular, the differential pin retaining screw is liable to come loose while the vehicle is in operation. If the screw comes loose, the differential can break or lock up. A broken differential can cause a loss of power or the inability to maintain control over the vehicle. Both scenarios increase the likelihood of an accident.
  • This Ram fuel tank recall comes less than a year after the Chrysler 200 airbag recall, which affected millions of vehicles across the nation. Although they are alarming, recalls of this nature are not unusual for the manufacturer. In 2015, the NHTSA fined Fiat Chrysler over $100 million for mishandling a series of recall campaigns that affected 11 million vehicles.
