Despite a reputation in the automotive industry as a leader in producing mid-sized trucks, the 2016-2017 model year line of Toyota Tacoma V6 trucks has been plagued by problems. More than 250,000 vehicles are impacted by potential safety issues which could put the lives of Tacoma drivers and their passengers in jeopardy. Details on current vehicle safety recalls are provided below.
Recall Subject: 2016-2017 Toyota Tacoma V6 truck
NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V356000, 17V285000
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) currently has two open campaigns regarding safety issues with the model year 2016-2017 Toyota Tacoma V6 truck. The latest, campaign number, 17V356000, concerns a July 2017 safety recall on engine components affecting 31,824 vehicles. According to a Toyota news release on the recall, the company admits excessive anti-corrosion coating on the crankshaft timing rotor, which may cause the crank position sensor to malfunction. This could trigger the malfunction indicator light (MIL) to come on, while causing misfires and stalling of the vehicle.
This comes on the heels of another recall announced April 2017, which is listed under NHTSA campaign number 17V285000 and affects as many as 227,732 vehicles. It concerns powertrain components, in which defects cause engine oil to leak from the rear differential carrier. With insufficient oil, the component could seize, causing a loss of control of the vehicle.
Problems with the crank position sensor and lack of oil in the rear differential can have severe safety impacts for consumers. Loss of control and stalling can be particularly dangerous if drivers are going at a high rate of speed, leaving them vulnerable to serious and potentially life-threatening car accidents and injuries.
If you drive a 2016 or 2017 Toyota Tacoma, you should receive notice about replacements for the crank position sensor when the recall takes effect July 17, 2017. The recall concerning the rear differential began June 19, 2017. If an oil leak is detected, the dealer with repair or replace the differential. All inspections, repairs, and replacements are performed free of charge.
