Lemon Laws by State

Unless otherwise specified under the specific state below, the manufacturer is allowed three repair attempts. A lemon law claim also can be brought when the vehicle is out of service for thirty days unless otherwise specified under the state designations below.

Alabama Lemon Laws

The law covers all vehicles intended primarily for use on public highways that are self-propelled. The law does not cover large vehicles with a gross weight of 10,000 pounds or more or motorhomes.

Alaska Lemon Laws

Four-wheeled vehicles that are self-propelled and intended primarily for the transportation of persons or property over public highways are covered. Off-road vehicles, tractors, and farm vehicles are excluded.

Arkansas Lemon Laws

The law covers vehicles purchased or leased that are self-propelled and designed principally for the transportation of property and people on highways and streets. The living facilities inside a motor home, motorcycles, and mopeds are excluded. Only a single repair chance is permitted for serious safety issues. Three repairs attempts are allowed for a single problem or five repair attempts for multiple problems.

California Lemon Laws

The law covers new vehicles primarily for household, family, or personal purposes. The chassis of a motor home is covered. The manufacturer gets two repair attempts for serious safety issues or a total of four attempts for non-safety defects.

Colorado Lemon Laws

Self-propelled passenger vehicles which include vans and pickup trucks designed primarily for traveling on public highways are covered. Vehicles that transport over ten passengers are excluded, as well as motorcycles and motorhomes. The manufacturer gets four repair attempts.

Connecticut Lemon Laws

The law covers both commercial and passenger vehicles. The manufacturer is allowed four repair attempts.

Delaware Lemon Laws

The statute covers passenger vehicles other than motorcycles and non-chassis parts of motorhomes. The manufacturer is allowed four repair attempts.

Florida Lemon Laws

New purchased or leased vehicles intended primarily for family, household, or personal use are covered. Trucks over 10,000 pounds gross weight, motorcycles, mopeds, motorhome living facilities, and off-road vehicles are excluded.

Georgia Lemon Laws

Leased or purchased self-propelled vehicles designed for transportation of property or persons over public highways are covered. Trucks over 10,000 pounds, motorcycles, and non-chassis parts of motorhomes are excluded. Three repair attempts are allowed unless the defect involves steering or braking defects that must be repaired on the first attempt.

Hawaii Lemon Laws

Self-propelled vehicles intended primarily for use on public highways and streets to transport property or people for family, personal, or household purposes are covered. Trucks over 10,000 pounds, motor scooters, moped, and motorcycles are excluded. The manufacturer gets a single repair attempt for serious safety defects or three repair attempts for other issues.

Idaho Lemon Laws

The statute covers new motor vehicles used for household, personal, family, or personal business use. The law excludes trailers, farm tractors, motor vehicles with a gross weight over 12,000 pounds, and motorcycles. The manufacturer gets four repair attempts.

Illinois Lemon Laws

New cars, vans (under 8,000 pounds), and light trucks are covered. The law excludes motorcycles and recreational vehicles. Manufacturers are allowed four repair attempts.

Indiana Lemon Laws

All self-propelled vehicles (gross weight under 10,000 pounds) primarily for us on public highways are covered. The law excludes off-road vehicles, snowmobiles, motorhomes, conversion vans, motorcycles, farm machinery, or mopeds. The manufacturer gets four repair attempts.

Iowa Lemon Laws

The statute covers self-propelled vehicle leased or purchased primarily for use on public highways and streets for transporting property or persons. The law excludes motorhomes, vehicles over 10,000 pounds, mopeds, and motorcycles. Manufacturers are allowed one repair attempt for serious safety issues and three repair attempts for non-safety issues.

Kansas Lemon Laws

The law covers purchased or leased new motor vehicles with a gross weight of 12,000 pounds or less but excludes customized parts of motor vehicles. The manufacturer is allowed four repair attempts for the same defect or ten repair attempts for different problems.

Kentucky Lemon Laws

The law covers all vehicles except motorcycles, vehicles with more than two axles, farm machinery, motorhomes, and mopeds. Four repair attempts permitted to the manufacturer.

Louisiana Lemon Laws

Any vehicle that is less than 10,000 pounds is covered, excluding commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and motorhomes. The manufacturer gets four repair attempts.

Maine Lemon Laws

Any leased or purchased vehicles are covered, excluding commercial vehicles more than 10,000 pounds. The vehicle is subject to lemon law liability after 15 days out of service.

Maryland Lemon Laws

Any passenger car or truck rated with a capacity of a ton or less is covered. The manufacturer gets one repair attempt for serious safety issues and four attempts for non-safety issues.

Massachusetts Lemon Laws

The excluded vehicles are those for commercial use, motorcycles, off-road vehicles, and motorhomes. The vehicle is subject to lemon law liability after 15 days out of service.

Michigan Lemon Laws

New cars, trucks, and vans purchased for family or personal purposes by a resident of Michigan are covered. Four repair attempts are permitted by the manufacturer.

Minnesota Lemon Laws

A new motor vehicle used for household, personal, or family use a minimum of forty percent of the time. Manufacturers are permitted one repair attempt for steering or braking issues or four attempts for other defects.

Mississippi Lemon Laws

The law covers a new vehicle primarily for household, family, or personal use, excluding mopeds, motorhomes (except the chassis), off-road vehicles, or motorcycles. Lemon law claim permitted after 15 business days out of service.

Missouri Lemon Laws

Law covers new motor vehicles primarily for family, household, or personal use but excludes recreational vehicles, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds, and off-road vehicles. The manufacturer get four repair attempts.

Montana Lemon Laws

All vehicles (except residential areas of motorhomes) that are self-propelled and designed primarily for transporting property or persons on public highways are covered. The law does not cover motorcycles or trucks with a gross weight of 10,000 pounds or more. Four repair attempts permitted.

Nebraska Lemon Laws

New motor vehicles for personal, business, family, or household use with the exclusion of motorhomes. Lemon law claims are permitted after four repair attempts or forty days out of service.

Nevada Lemon Laws

The law covers new motor vehicles for personal, family, or household purposes, excluding off-road vehicles or motorhomes. Manufacturers are allowed four repair attempts.

New Hampshire Lemon Laws

All four wheel vehicles with a gross weight of 9,000 pounds or less are covered. The law also includes mopeds, off-road recreational vehicles, and motorcycles.

New Jersey Lemon Laws

Law covers passenger cars, motorcycles, and non-residential portions of motorhomes.

New Mexico Lemon Laws

Passenger motor vehicles are covered, including motorcycles, cars, vans, and pickups if used primarily for family, personal, or household purposes. Vehicles must have a gross weight under 10,000 pounds. Manufacturers are allowed four repair attempts.

New York Lemon Laws

Non-commercial vehicles leased or purchased are covered, excluding certain motorhomes, motorcycles, and off-road vehicles. The law permits four repair attempts.

North Carolina Lemon Laws

New motor vehicles, excluding house trailers, are covered if their weight does not reach 10,000 pounds or more. Motorcycles, pickup trucks, and most vans are covered. Lemon law claims may be brought after four repair attempts or twenty days out of service during a one year period.

North Dakota Lemon Laws

Passenger motor vehicles that are 10,000 pounds or less and used primarily for family, household, or personal use are covered.

Ohio Lemon Laws

Law covers passenger cars, motorcycles, light trucks, and the chassis of motorhomes. The manufacturer is permitted three repair attempts for the same problem or eight repair attempts for different issues.

Oklahoma Lemon Laws

Vehicles that must be registered provided they do not exceed 10,000 pounds are covered along with the non-living areas of motorhomes. Manufacturers entitled to four repair attempts or until the vehicle has been out of service for 45 days.

Oregon Lemon Laws

The law covers new motor vehicles primarily intended for family, personal, household use. The manufacturer gets four repair attempts.

Pennsylvania Lemon Laws

The law covers vehicles primarily used for personal, household, or family purposes, excluding off-road vehicles, motorhomes, and motorcycles. The statute permits four repair attempts.

Rhode Island Lemon Laws

The statute applies to cars, motorcycles, vans, or trucks with a gross weight under 10,000 pounds. The manufacturer gets four repair attempts.

South Carolina Lemon Laws

Passenger motor vehicles (e.g. cars, light trucks, and vans)

South Dakota Lemon Laws

Self-propelled vehicles primarily intended for use and operation on public highways are covered, but the law excludes motorhomes and vehicles of 10,000 pounds or more. Manufacturers are permitted four repair attempts plus one final attempt.

Tennessee Lemon Laws

The law covers all vehicles except recreational vehicles, ATVs, motorized bicycles, vehicles exceeding 10,000 pounds, and motorhomes. Manufacturers get four repair attempts.

Texas Lemon Laws

New vehicles are covered, including motorcycles ATVs, cars, towable recreational vehicles, trucks, motorhomes, and vans. Manufacturer are permitted two repair attempts for serious safety issues or four repair attempts for non-safety issues.

Utah Lemon Laws

Cars and trucks under 12,000 pounds and motorhomes are covered. Manufacturer allowed four chances to fix the problem.

Vermont Lemon Laws

Motor vehicles used substantially for family, household or personal use are covered.

Washington Lemon Laws

The statute covers all new self-propelled vehicles primarily designed to transport property or people on public highways. Motorcycles are covered, but the law excludes trucks with a gross weight of 19,000 pounds and above, as well as the living area in motorhomes. The manufacturer is permitted two repair attempts for serious safety problems and four opportunities for non-safety issues.

District of Columbia Lemon Laws

All vehicles sold or registered that are designed for transportation of people are covered, but motorhomes, buses, recreational vehicles, and motorcycles are excluded. Manufacturers are permitted four repair attempts.

West Virginia Lemon Laws

Passenger vehicles, motorhome chassis, vans, and pickup trucks primarily intended for family, personal, or household use are covered.

Wisconsin Lemon Laws

The law covers all vehicles except semi-trailers, mopeds, and trailers used with tractor-trailers. Manufacturers are permitted four repair chances.

Wyoming Lemon Laws

The statute covers all vehicles that have a gross weight under 10,000 pounds
